When to get in touch

In Turin it helps to contact a criminal lawyer (avvocato penalista) as early as possible: after a notice of investigation (avviso di garanzia), a search, a police stop, or a request to attend a police station, and equally when you are the injured party of an offence and want to know how to protect yourself. Acting straight away, before any questioning or hearing, leaves room to review the file and weigh your position and any precautionary measures calmly. Every stage can be handled in English or Italian, with no translation layer in between.

Frequently asked questions

When should I contact a criminal lawyer in Turin?

As early as possible — after a notice of investigation, a search, a stop, or a summons, and also when you are the injured party of an offence. A first contact is by appointment, and your position and next steps can already be mapped out there.

What does it mean to receive an avviso di garanzia (notice of investigation)?

It means an investigation is under way and that you have the right to appoint a defence lawyer — it is not a conviction, but the right moment to get assistance. Depending on how things develop, a case can move towards trial or be resolved through alternative procedures such as a plea agreement (patteggiamento); this is assessed case by case.

What's the difference between a difensore d'ufficio (duty solicitor) and a lawyer of your own choosing?

A difensore d'ufficio is the lawyer the State assigns to anyone who hasn't appointed their own; a difensore di fiducia is the one you choose yourself. Anna is a qualified duty solicitor and can also be appointed as your chosen defence lawyer.

What are precautionary measures (misure cautelari), and how quickly can you respond to them?

These are measures a judge can impose during proceedings, such as custody in prison, house arrest, or a duty to report regularly to the police. Requests and appeals against them generally carry short deadlines, so it's important to speak to a lawyer without delay.

I'm the injured party (persona offesa) in a criminal case — can you help me?

Yes. Anna assists both defendants and injured parties — for example in filing a criminal complaint and, where the conditions are met, in joining the proceedings as a civil party (parte civile). Each situation is assessed case by case.

Can the defence be handled in English?

Yes. Anna Muscat is a native English and Italian speaker and handles the whole defence in both languages, from the paperwork to the hearings, with no translation layer. That's useful for anyone living or working in Turin whose first language isn't Italian.
